Built to Spill es una banda de indie rock estadounidense de Idaho nacida en 1992.
Built to Spill nunca fue considerado la nueva promesa del indie rock internacional y quizá eso le sirvió para conseguir formarse una reputación enorme entre los círculos más entendidos. En la estela de Pavement, pero con una trayectoria mucho más compacta, ha llegado hasta la actualidad a un nivel formidable y sigue ofreciendo experiencias sonoras excitantes. Hoy en día es una banda de culto que tiene su posición internacional ganada a pulso. Se sustenta sobre todo en unas brillantes melodías con la presencia de dos o tres guitarras.
Doug Martsch, cantante del grupo, ha citado el estilo de J Mascis, líder de Dinosaur Jr. como principal influencia. El grupo además ha mencionado a Neil Young, y a Pavement como influencias. Se les ha comparado con sus compañeros de generación Modest Mouse y Death Cab for Cutie, más que nada porque las tres bandas han sido vinculadas al movimiento indie conocido como el sonido Northwest.También es notable, sobre todo en sus primeras producciones, la influencia de la banda Pixies. Por último Built to Spill está vinculado con el grupo de Brett Netson Caustic Resin desde 1995 más que nada por el intercambio de músicos entre ambas.
